## Plastering that sets up a perfect paint finish
Our plastering service covers surface preparation, skimming and plaster repairs on walls and ceilings. It's the stage that turns cracked, patched or uneven surfaces into a smooth base that paint or wallpaper can sit on properly.

It's for homeowners whose walls have cracks, blown patches or old repairs that show through paint, people who've had electrical, plumbing or building work that left damage, and anyone redecorating who wants a genuinely smooth finish.

It's usually needed after removing wallpaper reveals a poor surface, after rewiring or new sockets, when cracks keep reappearing, when old plaster has blown and sounds hollow, or when previous repairs are visible under every coat of paint.

Most decorators have to bring in a separate plasterer and then wait for them. Because we plaster as well as decorate, the repair is done with the final finish in mind, the drying time is planned into the job, and you only deal with one team.

## What happens when bad walls are painted over
Paint doesn't hide plaster problems. It usually highlights them.

### Cracks reappear
Filling and painting over a structural or movement crack without proper repair usually means it shows again within weeks.

### Blown plaster spreads
Plaster that has come away from the wall can crumble and fall, and the area tends to grow if it's left.

### Every flaw shows
Low sunlight across a wall reveals bumps, dips and old patches. Newer, flatter paint finishes make this even more obvious.

### Painting new plaster too soon
Painting plaster before it's dry, or without a mist coat, is one of the most common causes of peeling paint.

## Plastering work we carry out
From a single patch to a full room skim, here's what's involved.

### Skimming walls and ceilings
A thin finishing coat of plaster applied over an existing surface to make it smooth and even. Ideal when walls are sound but uneven, patchy or covered in old repairs.

### Patch repairs
Holes from removed fixings, damage from rewiring or plumbing, chipped corners and small blown areas repaired and blended into the surrounding wall.

### Crack repairs
Cracks are opened up, treated and repaired rather than simply filled, which gives them the best chance of not returning.

### After wallpaper removal
Stripping old paper often damages the surface underneath. Skimming gives a clean base for paint or new wallpaper.

### Drying and mist coats
New plaster needs time to dry before painting. We plan this into the schedule and apply a mist coat so the finishing coats bond properly.

### Homes and commercial premises
In homes we keep dust and mess contained. In commercial spaces we plan plastering and drying time around the areas that need to stay open.

## Understanding plaster problems before you decorate

### Signs your walls need plastering
Not every wall needs plastering before it's painted, but some signs mean filler won't be enough. Cracks that keep coming back, areas that sound hollow when tapped, crumbling or bulging plaster, and walls covered in old patch repairs that show through paint are all signs that plastering will give a better result.

Removing old wallpaper often reveals damaged or uneven surfaces too. In older properties, walls may have been painted and papered many times, leaving a surface that's hard to get looking smooth.

### Skimming vs patch repairs
A patch repair fixes a specific damaged area, such as a hole from a removed fixing or a section of blown plaster. Skimming applies a thin finishing coat over a whole wall or ceiling to make the entire surface smooth and even.

If a wall has lots of small repairs or an uneven surface overall, skimming is often more effective than trying to patch and fill everything individually. On the visit we'll explain which approach suits your walls.

### Drying time and decorating
New plaster contains water and needs time to dry before it can be decorated. How long depends on thickness, temperature and ventilation. Painting too early can trap moisture and cause paint to peel or bubble.

Once dry, fresh plaster is very absorbent, so it needs a mist coat, a diluted first coat that soaks in and seals the surface, before the finishing coats. Because we decorate as well as plaster, this is planned into the job so the finish is right first time.

### One team from repair to finish
The big advantage of using a decorator who plasters is that there's no gap between trades. You don't need to book a plasterer, wait for them, and then hope the decorator is happy with the surface they've been left. The same team handles the repair and the finish, and all completed work is guaranteed.

Every job is quoted individually after a free visit. Smaller jobs are paid on completion, and larger jobs work on a deposit and agreed payment schedule.

### What to expect while your plastering is underway
Before any plastering begins, we agree the scope, the order of work and a realistic timescale with you, so you know which rooms or areas will be affected and when. Floors, furniture and fixtures are protected before work starts, and the work area is kept as tidy as possible throughout, with a clean-up at the end of the job.

Our working hours are 8am to 7pm, Monday to Friday. If anything unexpected comes up once surfaces are exposed, such as hidden damage behind old paper or paint, we'll explain it to you before going further, so there are no surprises on the final bill.

When the work is finished, we walk through it with you and put right anything you're not happy with. Smaller jobs are paid on completion. Larger jobs are paid according to the deposit and payment schedule agreed at the start. All completed work is guaranteed.

### Why choose A&S Decorators for plastering
A&S Decorators was set up by Ashley Power around 16 years ago, backed by more than 25 years in the trade. It started as a two-person team and has grown steadily through long-term client relationships and repeat work across Cheshire and South Manchester. When you book plastering with us, you're dealing with an established local business rather than an anonymous contractor.

The key difference is that we handle the preparation trades most decorators have to subcontract: plastering, small joinery and specialist uPVC spraying. That means fewer people in your property, no waiting between trades, and one point of contact from the free visit to the finished job.

Ashley is City & Guilds qualified, we carry £2 million public liability insurance, and all completed work is guaranteed. We can supply all paints and materials and help with colours, or work with materials you supply. For larger jobs, we bring in extra decorators to shorten the timescale and keep disruption to a minimum.
